Build Third Temple... Start Sacrifices?

Postby Perdonado on Thu Jan 31, 2008 2:57 pm

This is something that I've being thinking about lately...

Let's just say that there is a third temple that is built. We've seen a number of news articles that show there are groups ready and waiting the rebuild this temple (Temple Mount Faithful, Temple Institute, etc.).

My question is:

If a third temple is built, then will sacrifices be allowed to commence, and will the sacrifices of the "high priest" be enough to satisfy biblical prophecy?

Here is the prophecy that I'm referring to:
Daniel 12:11 – “From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days.”
So, what is the daily sacrifice?
    Numbers 28:1-8
    Daily Offerings
1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 "Give this command to the Israelites and say to them: 'See that you present to me at the appointed time the food for my offerings made by fire, as an aroma pleasing to me.' 3 Say to them: 'This is the offering made by fire that you are to present to the LORD : two lambs a year old without defect, as a regular burnt offering each day. 4 Prepare one lamb in the morning and the other at twilight, 5 together with a grain offering of a tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with a quarter of a hin of oil from pressed olives. 6 This is the regular burnt offering instituted at Mount Sinai as a pleasing aroma, an offering made to the LORD by fire. 7 The accompanying drink offering is to be a quarter of a hin of fermented drink with each lamb. Pour out the drink offering to the LORD at the sanctuary. 8 Prepare the second lamb at twilight, along with the same kind of grain offering and drink offering that you prepare in the morning. This is an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the LORD.

So, we have a situation in which the Bible declares that ALL ISRAELITES are required to offer daily sacrifices. Am I missing something? How would this be possible? Where are all of the animals going to come from? Would we actually see 6 million + Israelites start bringing their sacrifices to the Temple?

Perdonado,
I think the two lambs are for all Israelites. The only real mass sacrifice that I recall is the dedication of the temple.

Am I to gather from your post that you think it's possible there will be a third temple built? :)

Oh socks... I don't want to go down that path again.

But to your point, I see another place where you get that reference...
    Exodus 29:38-39
38 "This is what you are to offer on the altar regularly each day: two lambs a year old. 39 Offer one in the morning and the other at twilight.
So, is this command limiting the daily sacrifice to an event that is only performed by the high priest on behalf of the Israelites?

If so, then I must have been confused by the wording of Number 28:1-8. It makes the command seem to be directed at all of the Israelites individually.

I guess I also get tripped up on the following verses too:
    Numbers 29
    Feast of Trumpets
1 " 'On the first day of the seventh month hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. It is a day for you to sound the trumpets. 2 As an aroma pleasing to the LORD, prepare a burnt offering of one young bull, one ram and seven male lambs a year old, all without defect. 3 With the bull prepare a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil; with the ram, two-tenths; 4 and with each of the seven lambs, one-tenth. 5 Include one male goat as a sin offering to make atonement for you. 6 These are in addition to the monthly and daily burnt offerings with their grain offerings and drink offerings as specified. They are offerings made to the LORD by fire—a pleasing aroma.

This also seems to be directed at individual Israelites.

Oh socks... I don't want to go down that path again.

Nor do I my friend :) Nor do I.

Yeah I think these were for the nation as a whole. I doubt that most Israelites could even afford that kind of offering every day. God even allowed for the poor when making women "clean" after giving birth.
Leviticus 12:6 " 'When the days of her purification for a son or daughter are over, she is to bring to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting a year-old lamb for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a dove for a sin offering. 7 He shall offer them before the LORD to make atonement for her, and then she will be ceremonially clean from her flow of blood.
" 'These are the regulations for the woman who gives birth to a boy or a girl. 8 If she cannot afford a lamb, she is to bring two doves or two young pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean.' "

It has been suggested that eating pork is unclean and therefore God was telling us what is healthy or good for us to eat. Do you think that a woman who has her time of the month is somehow sick or unhealthy and that we might catch something from her if we touch her?

 sorry, couldn't resist...did I cross the line?

Not to change the subject :) but someone sent this today and I thought it might be of interest.

This is what the Professor thinks has to take place before a Temple could be built.

To Save Israel : Think Jewish With the Help of Classical Political Science

Prof . Paul Eidelberg

According to Maimonides, Mishneh Torah (Kings and Wars), Chapter 1: “ Israel was commanded to fulfill three mitzvot upon entering the Promised Land:

A. To appoint a king, as [Deuteronomy 17:5] states: “appoint a king over yourselves;”
B. To wipe out the descendants of Amalek, as [Deuteronomy 25:19] states: “Erase the memory of Amalek;”
C. To build [God’s] Chosen House, as [Deuteronomy 12:5] states: “Seek out His Promise and go there . ”

Since the present writer is not a Talmudic scholar, anything I say regarding the above is solely for heuristic purposes .

A . The first mitzvah, to appoint a king, requires Jews to topple the Ehud Olmert Government . This Government is a democratically elected despotism that is betraying our people, dividing our God-given land, and violating our civil rights to the extent of placing Jewish girls in prison with drug addicts and prostitutes . (Public outrage should explode that Olmert should liberate Arab terrorists and imprison teenage Jewish children for putting up tent on a Jewish hilltop!)

Let’s be serious about how to stand up for these Jewish heroines: Replace Israel’s unJewish and sham democracy with a system of government consistent with Jewish law . The closest thing to kingship is a popularly elected president . (Note: When there is no Sanhedrin and no prophet to elect a king of Israel , the power reverts to the People . )

Massive civil disobedience will be required to accomplish this goal . Non-parliamentary nationalist groups should form a strategy board possessing the know-how—elaborated elsewhere—to compel the Olmert clique to resign and force the Knesset to take the following course of action (of which space permits only the barest outlines):

1 . Since only a Member of the Knesset, accordingly to Basic Law: Government, is eligible to be Prime Minister, and since the law does not require any other MK to be a member of the Cabinet, simply amend the law to exclude any other office-holder from being a cabinet minister . (This will eliminate the divisive, inept, and corrupt system of multi-party cabinet government . )

2 . The Prime Minister will nominate cabinet ministers—a team united by shared goals and values . Their appointment must be approved, however, by an absolute majority of the Knesset .

3 . Since cabal and corruption may tarnish the approval of cabinet appointments because of the excessive number of parties in the Knesset resulting from Israel’s parliamentary system—where party slates compete in a single countrywide election on the basis of proportional representation—this system must be replaced by regional or constituency elections . Knesset Members, instead of being subservient to party machines or party leaders in the Cabinet, will then be accountable to the voters . This will empower the people and render the Knesset independent of the Government—a precondition of institutional checks and balances .

4 . Abolish the existing office of the president, designate the Prime Minister as the Nation’s President, and endow him with Executive powers .

5 . Divide the nation into 80 single-member plurality election districts of roughly equal population . Provide for 40 compensatory Knesset seats drawn proportionally from national lists using a 5% threshold . (See how this is done in Sweden , Denmark , and Germany . )

6 . The Knesset will then call for new elections .

This will yield the equivalent of a king, who will be elected by the People for a fixed (renewable) tenure of four years .

Simultaneously, the People will be empowered in the Knesset by having elected MKs in constituency elections .

B . Abrogate Oslo and destroy the Palestinian Authority with its entire terrorist network west of the Jordan River . Provide measures and incentives for accelerating the present exodus of Arabs from Jewish land .

C . Rebuild the Temple .
